The main theme within the work can be described as visceral.
I want the work to express raw emotional states and bodily conditions. I draw from the figure, internal organs and psychological landscapes.
I borrow conceptually from the baroque period and incorporate its use of excessive detail, exaggerated motion, drama, tension and exuberance.
Themes of desire are at the forefront of the work, particularly when taken to an extreme it can spiral into repulsion. This duality is of great importance and is always present in the work. I’m interested in how a piece can take on both of these qualities. The use of different time scales is important within my practice. I want the modelling to be quick and instinctual and carry the essence of the intended piece. This is often followed by the more laboured process of casting, where it is transformed and solidified within a different material relationship. |
